[English] Colonel Baden-Powell.

Colonel Baden-Powell.

Colonel Baden-Powell, who is in command of the Colonial forces at Mafeking, is a younger brother of the late Sir George Baden-Powell, M.P. for the Kirkdale Division of Liverpool; and has followed his example in taking enthusiastic interest in Colonial affairs. It is within general recollection that the gallant officer, after doing splendid work for the expedition against King Prempeh of Ashantee, became one of the most active and successful figures in the suppression of the Matabele rebellion. It is not so well known, however (says the Daily News), that he earned from the Matabele the soubriquet of Impeesi, meaning 'be that creeps about by night,' from his (to them) uncomfortable habit of scouting alone among their strongholds during the hours of darkness, and gaining thereby much valuable information. The experience gathered in these daring enterprises has, it may be safely assumed, been utilised by Colonel Baden-Powell against the Boers around Mafeking, and he probably knows nearly as much of their intentions and resources as they know themselves.
