LORD BADEN POWELL ARRIVES
GOEDOELLOE (Hungary), Aug. 1.
British scouts- 2,100 of them - arrived to-day at Goedoelloe, the Windsor of Hungary, for the opening of the great World Jamboree in the Royal Park.
The Chief Scout, Lord Baden Powell, also reached Goedoelloe to-day. He travelled some of the way by boat with a party of American scouts who only recognised him after 12 hours.
Great admiration was expressed here for the efficient way in which the British contingent detrained and marched off, while the kilts of the Scottish scouts made a great impression on the local inhabitants.
About 20,000 scouts, representing 34 nations, are encamped here for the Jamboree, which is to last two weeks. Some of them come from as far away as India, Australia and South Africa. To-day they are busy pitching and decorating their tents.
During the Jamboree (it is held every four years in different parts of the world) the Scouts will give displays of their various activities and national dances.
At the same time, leaders of the movement are holding their biennial conference under the direction of the International Scout Committee.
Human Alphabet.
London Scouts will become a human alphabet to form the word "London" on the rally ground. They are also giving demonstration of massed signalling and running a chariot race. Kent and Sussex are joining forces to present an historical pageant, "The Landing of the Romans," with cardboard armour and chariots made from trek carts. The Scottish Scouts are to be accompanied in Highland dances and jigs by their own pipers. Berkshire will contribute folk songs and sword and Morris dances and camp games.
Wiltshire Scouts are to perform a dramatic version of the Wiltshire moonrakers' song, Warwickshire a local legend, and Dorset and Devon a shadowgraph.
There will also be an international relay race by land, sea and air. Competing teams will start in aeroplanes, and the batons will be handed on by glider, on horseback, on cycle and motor-cycle, by motor-car, by swimming, by rowing, by motor-boat, and finally by runners.- Reuter.
