[English] LORD BADEN-POWELL OF GILWELL DEAD

9 January 1941

LORD BADEN-POWELL OF GILWELL DEAD

The death has occurred at Nyeri, Kenya, at 6.10 a.m. yesterday of LIEUTENANT-GEN. LORD "BADEN-POWELL" OF GILWELL, O.M., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.C.B., LL.D., F.R.G.S., CHIEF SCOUT OF THE WORLD, in his 83rd year, says Reuter.

His condition first gave rise to anxiety in November last when he began to suffer from heart attacks, and in the middle of the month his condition was described as critical. He pulled through but had been in ill-health since.

Boy Scouts in all parts of the world will attend synchronised services in memory of their late Chief Scout.

Imperial Headquarters in London have not yet decided whether the services shall be held on Jan. 12 or Jan. 19.

Lord Baden-Powell will be buried at Nyeri today.

In the great Scout movement of which he has been Chief, since it was founded in 1908, he has left a memorial unique in history. It is typical that the Chief Scout spent his last days in preparing and illustrating a Christmas card, which was received in the Scout Headquarters in London last week, says a London message.

Sir Ian Hamilton paid the following tribute to Lord Robert yesterday: "B.P. stood equally for Baden-Powell and British public. For the latter the former was always ready to play up. His personality and skill was well known and one of the most notable figures of the old army now passes away."
