OBJECTION TO BADEN-POWELL
London, 20th January.
The appointment of General Baden-Powell as Inspector-General of Cavalry is strongly condemned in military quarters. Criticism of the appointment is based on his failure in the effort to handle the constabulary in South Africa and the enormous cost in which that experiment involved the Government. It is said that the sole reason for the appointment lay in the fact that only a major-general of cavalry was available for the place. The hope is expressed among military men that the inspector-generalship of the Indian cavalry will be more creditably assigned, especially in view of the military development apprehended in India.
