Resourceful Scout.

A remarkable life-saving feat has been performed in the Thames at Reading, the hero of which is a Boy Scout named William Jefferies. Three boys, of whom Christopher Welford was one, entered a Canadian canoe near Reading Bridge "for fun," and for a similar purpose another youngster cut them adrift from the raft to which the canoe was attached. Overburdened as it was, the frail boat appeared to be sinking, whereupon Welford jumped into the river, whilst the canoe, containing the other two boys, drifted in the direction of Caversham Weir. A boatman succeeded in rescuing them, but Welford had disappeared under the water. Jefferies, inducing other lads to help him to form a "human ladder," entered the river and found Welford, and the boys who remained on the bank succeeded in hauling the others to land. Welford is confined to bed, but is making a good recovery.
