WOLF CUB'S BRAVERY REWARDED

Letter From Lord Baden Powell

HELPED TO CATCH A THIEF

Antonio Bayot, a Sixer of the local Wolf Cubs and a student at La Salle College, has received a letter of commendation from Lord Baden Powell of Gilwell, Chief Scout, for helping in the arrest of a thief in Kowloon last August.

Young Bayot lives with his parents at No. 13, Ashley Road, Kowloon. He took part in the Coronation Scouts and Guides Rally on the Football Club ground but when his turn came to be presented with the diploma recognising his courage, he could not be found. He was accordingly presented with it later by the Rev. N. V. Halward, Commissioner for Scouts and Cubs.

CHIEF SCOUT'S LETTER

The letter he received from the Chief Scout stated:

Dear Sixer Bayot,

I want to congratulate you on a smart bit of Cub work which you did when helping to catch a thief last August.

You showed yourself to have both eyes open and to be able to think quickly of the right thing to do and not to lose any time in carrying it out.

In doing this you have upheld the good name of the Cubs and I congratulate you and wish you all further success as a Cub and later, I hope, as a Scout.

Best wishes,

Yours truly,

(signed) Baden Powell of Gilwell

INCIDENT RECALLED

The full story of Bayot's bravery was recounted by Inspector Andrew at the Kowloon Magistracy last August when Chan Cheung Shing, 19, pleaded guilty to stealing a locket and necklace from Mrs. Sousae, of 22, Johnston Road.

Tony Bayot, and another lad, named John James, of 58, Nathan Road, were congratulated by Mr. E. Himsworth for their good work.

"About twenty children joined in the chase," said Insp. Andrew. "Only two - both boys aged 12 years - however, kept him in sight all the time."

The accused was eventually arrested by a Chinese constable.

The snatching incident occurred in Hankow Road while Mrs. Sousae was walking in company with the Misses B. and L. Place. After snatching the locket and necklace, the accused bolted to the Kowloon Godowns with the children in hot pursuit. Finding that his escape was cut short, Chan jumped into the harbour from the wharf and concealed himself behind a junk. Chan was dragged from the water by means of a rope.
